The Male Midlife Transition
The Way Is Through.

In midlife, men look fine.
Underneath, something's shifting: identity, purpose, what comes next.
The first rule of midlife: don't talk about midlife.
Men pay for that silence. So do their employers.
I created The Hades Effect to bring male midlife into the open. For men today. And for the generations that follow.
Midlife is not the crisis. Midlife left unaddressed is.

The Hades Effect is a structured coaching process for men navigating the male midlife transition. It provides the awareness, language and practical framework to understand what has changed, decide what comes next and act on it.
It is informed by Jungian psychology, Stoic philosophy, Jonathan's lived experience and 25 years working alongside high-performing professionals and senior leaders through significant career decisions and transitions.
See what's actually happening to a man in midlifeThe Midlife Map gives structure to a transition many men feel but do not know how to describe.
An honest look at what has changed, what built the first half and what is no longer true.
The work begins with a decision to stop, look honestly and face what is there.
Awareness becomes accountability, communication, a plan and constructive action.
No one is coming to save you. What happens next is yours to own.
The second half, approached with greater self-knowledge, perspective and intention.
Discipline means consistently keeping the promises you make to yourself, long after motivation fades.
Decision. Action. Discipline.
The aim is not to fix you. You were never broken. You were navigating a transition you had never been taught to recognise. The work is designed to help you:
Recognise where you are on the Midlife Map, what may have triggered the transition and what sits beneath it.
Examine the identity, beliefs and patterns built during the first half. Keep what still serves you. Challenge what does not.
Make clearer decisions about your career, relationships, health and the way you want to approach the second half.
Turn awareness into consistent action through accountability, discipline and keeping the promises you make to yourself.
A clearer sense of who you are, what matters and what you are doing next.
You have achieved what you set out to achieve and quietly wonder why it does not feel like enough.
A career ending, a relationship shifting, children leaving or a parent passing. The ground has moved.
Nothing is obviously wrong, but the question will not leave. You want a way through, not a motivational talk.
You are done waiting it out or trying to push it down. You are ready to do the work properly.
Structured one-to-one coaching for men navigating change in identity, career, relationships or direction during midlife.
In person in Harrogate and online across the UK and beyond.
Corporate speaking and wellbeing sessions that give men language for what they may be experiencing, while managers and HR gain a practical framework for recognising and responding to it.
When I turned 50, my career of 25 years ended. Then my relationship. My children had left home and my dad had passed. On the day that should have been a milestone, I lay in bed asking: who am I now?
Nobody was coming to save me. I had to do the work.
I spent 25 years in executive recruitment, working alongside high-performing professionals and senior leaders through career decisions, organisational change and transition. I also know what it looks like when a man appears to be holding everything together while privately questioning who he is and what comes next.
I created The Midlife Map after navigating my own transition and finding no framework that explained the complete experience. Today I work privately with men, including chief executives and senior leaders, and with organisations seeking to understand and support men through midlife.
The second half of your life can be at least as good as the first. Not by accident. By decision.

Get The Hades FilesNo. The Hades Effect is coaching, not therapy or counselling. It is a structured, forward-moving process designed to help you understand what has shifted in midlife and decide what comes next. If you are in crisis or need clinical support, coaching is not a substitute for professional mental health care, and Jonathan will always say so.
Both. Jonathan is based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire and works with men in person across Yorkshire, as well as online with clients anywhere in the UK and beyond.
Men in midlife, often high-performing professionals, who feel the identity they built in the first half no longer fits. It may have been triggered by a career change, a relationship ending, bereavement or simply a quiet "is this it?" The process is for men ready to face it rather than wait it out.
A free, no-obligation conversation and an honest look at where you are right now, with someone who has been there. It is the starting point. No pressure. No script.
